Portable Fan

First on the list for all of the great reasons in the world, a portable fan when traveling is absolutely a women travel essential that you want to have!

Traveling requires a lot of movement in general, but if you are embarking on an outdoor activity or have a full face of makeup you want to preserve throughout the day, having this little device will come in handy and help you stay dry!

I have this fan and it has a flashlight built into it as well.

Noise Canceling Headphones

Peace is priceless when traveling and lets you get in tune with yourself as you prepare to make more memories in unfamiliar territory. That’s why a good pair of noise-canceling headphones come in handy for noisy plane rides or the commute from one destination to another once you reach your final destination.

Waterproof Phone Pouch

A waterproof phone pouch is a must-have if you’re big on capturing memories of some of your best water adventures and excursions while traveling.

Having the pouch will ensure the safety and functionality of your smartphone against water damage. You can keep your peace of mind while ensuring you get your memories and a water-damage-free device afterward.

Money Belt

As women, we tend to travel with what is usually a midsize or cross-body bag to embark on our daily adventures, and having all of your necessities in the same place as your money can get messy.

It can also be a pickpocket’s dream, as money can be taken from your bag while your attention is diverted by what is happening around you.

A money belt that you can fasten around your waist is a great way to combat this. Money belts can be hidden underneath your clothes, making it easy to keep your money safe at all times.

Weekender Bag

A “Weekender Bag” is essentially a large duffle bag or stylish tote bag that has the ability to fit 3-5 days of essential items for your trip. With lots of space intentionally built into these bags, you’ll find that there is no need for a carry-on suitcase or checking in a bag to bring everything you need on your trip.

Whether you’re going away for a day, an actual weekend, or just looking for a compact bag to store items in, weekender bags are for your convenience

Portable Luggage Scale

One of my personal favorite women’s travel essential items, having a luggage scale, has saved me from so much embarrassment in the check-in line at many airports!

This small but mighty tool allows you to weigh your bags from the comfort of your home before heading to the airport.

It can either save you from paying overweight baggage charges or give you a heads-up on how much extra you will have to pay. Many portable luggage scales can weigh over 100+ pounds, making them small and convenient.

Hygiene Wipes

Maintaining cleanliness and comfort on the go as a woman is a must when traveling, and that’s where hygiene wipes come in handy.

Hygiene wipes allow you to upkeep your hygiene and appearance while on the go and contribute to a sense of well-being, allowing you to navigate your travels feeling your best.

I always have a container of wipes packed in my personal bag on every trip to freshen up while on the plane and during airport stops, especially during long trips!

Charger Organizer

As someone who owns several electronic devices, I’ll be the first one to admit that keeping track of all of the different chargers for these devices can be a headache. However, with a charger organizer you can ensure that all of the plugs and cords you need can be conveniently found in one place.

Tripod

A tripod is a woman’s new best friend when traveling, and that is why it makes this list of women travel essentials!

An invaluable companion, especially for women travelers, having a tripod can enhance your travel experience by eliminating the need to rely on strangers to take your pictures.

If you’ve ever missed out on a great potential photo-op due to being too shy to ask those around you to take your picture or being completely alone at a place, a tripod will come in handy moving forward so we get to see your amazing travel experiences!

Carbon Monoxide Detector

Due to the influx of carbon monoxide deaths of travelers that have been reported over the years, having a carbon monoxide detector is another essential travel item that may be worth packing on your trip.

While many accommodations have these detectors installed in rooms, that is not the standard everywhere. Having your own detector that you can easily set up when traveling can save your life and ensure that you are not subject to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Sunglasses

What’s a trip without a nice pair of shades to keep the sun out of your eyes or be able to watch people without getting caught in the act!

If you are traveling solo, you may find that sunglasses can also add a layer of comfort as you navigate through unfamiliar territory, so be sure to stock up on some shades or pack your favorite pair for your next trip.

Mini Sewing Kit

You never know when a wardrobe malfunction is just waiting to happen and threatens to impact an event or activity on your trip, which is why a mini sewing kit is on this women travel essentials list.

Having a mini sewing kit while traveling has saved me from serious wardrobe malfunctions on more than one occasion. Buttons have come loose, zippers have gotten stuck, and holes have been spotted.

Thankfully, I had my kit on me and was able to keep my clothes in check while I’m out there exploring the world. Definitely a must-pack for any woman on the go!

Luggage Locks

A key safety tip for travel is purchasing luggage locks for your check-in bags when traveling.

While it has been said that TSA can still open these locks, I can imagine that it would add more time to what they have to do, so they would be less likely to do so. Though I can’t confirm or deny this since I am not a TSA agent 🙂

But most importantly, it will deter thieves at baggage claim or in the airport, ensuring you receive your luggage with all your belongings inside.

VPN Service

Having a VPN while traveling is extremely important, especially if your line of work requires you to be online often.

Depending on the country you visit, specific platforms like Facetime, WhatsApp, and even Facebook will not be accessible without a VPN.

A VPN also keeps your internet connection secure, especially on public networks.

I have been using ExpressVPN for years now and it has yet to fail me. Use my link here and receive 30 days free

Backpack

As a woman on the move, having a sturdy backpack can take you a long way. It has all the pockets for the random stuff you collect on your journey, from souvenirs to snacks you can store to have throughout the day.

A backpack allows you to roam through the streets hands-free in an organized fashion. The travels where I incorporate a backpack are typically more outdoorsy, but I’m sure it would make life easier on the other types of travels as well.

Neck Pillow

Neck pillows can be a game changer for many women travelers. I have been on many long journeys via bus and plane.

Having a neck pillow has saved me from moving with a stiff neck more times than I can count.

It’s not just about catching some sleep but about arriving at your destination without feeling like you’ve been through a wrestling match with your seat.

Many neck pillows don’t take up much space and are worth packing for those long transportation routes.

Electrical Outlet Adapter

An electrical outlet adapter is an actual must-have when traveling. I do not pack any of my travel bags without including an adapter.

Having this packed and ready to go eliminates the stress over whether your charger will plug into the different outlets of the world.

Just toss this adapter in your bag, and you’re all set to charge up your devices wherever your adventures take you. It’s the little things that make traveling smoother, and this adapter is definitely one of those little MVPs in my suitcase.

Toiletry Bag

How many times have you been on a trip and found yourself having to remove many items before being able to spot the personal care item you’re looking for?

This is why a toiletry bag is one of the women travel essentials on this list!

Having a toiletry bag is important for women when traveling, as it helps organize and store personal care items in a convenient and efficient manner. Having a designated bag for toiletries makes it easy to access your essentials during your journey.

Eye Mask

Traveling, especially across time zones, can disrupt your normal sleep patterns. An eye mask can help you relax on your flight and get the rest you need before arriving at your destination.

If you find it awkward trying to fall asleep while surrounded by strangers on a plane, having an eye mask can put you at ease and make it all easier.

Pads/Tampons

This list of women travel essentials would not be complete without including the items that will ensure that your trip can go on if you get a familiar monthly visitor.

Even when I’m not on my cycle, I like to always pack a pad or tampon in my bag if space permits. What you won’t need to use, another woman may need, so it never hurts!

Mini Umbrella

If you know you’ll be traveling to a destination where the rainy season is in full effect, a mini umbrella is one of the women travel essentials you’ll want to pack.

Thankfully, there are many compact and lightweight mini umbrellas that won’t take up much space and be there when you need them.

I am ashamed to say that I have had to purchase way too many umbrellas on a whim when traveling before finally purchasing a mini umbrella that goes with me everywhere, but it’s a purchase I have yet to regret.

Razor/Wax Strips

For any woman hitting the road, a trusty razor or a set of wax strips is an absolute essential.

I always try to pack a razor on my longer trips to avoid having to go searching for one later on.

I am all for women growing and embracing the hair that naturally grows in the various parts of our bodies. However, if that is not the vibe for you while on a trip, I completely understand and recommend having these tools handy.

Of course, in the worst-case scenario, you can find a nearby store and stock up, but having it packed is always more convenient!

Travel Credit Card

A travel credit card is hands down my go-to essential when I’m jet-setting around the globe. It’s like having a financial sidekick tailored for adventures.

With perks like no foreign transaction fees, travel rewards, and additional insurance coverage, it’s a game-changer for any woman on the move.

Whether I’m booking flights and accommodations or treating myself to excursions and activities, my travel credit cards ensure I’m getting the best deals or at least earning points for future trips.

I have had the Chase Sapphire Reserve Travel Card for three years (read my honest review here) and recently got the United Mileage Plus Card

When you use my links to both cards, you’ll receive extra benefits! Feel free to comment any questions you may have about the cards, and I’ll give my honest take.

I have been a Chase Sapphire Reserve Card holder for years now and the benefits this card offers is unmatched!

Door Stop Alarm

A doorstop alarm is a popular safety travel tool and an item that I have to place on this list to ensure that we are taking all of the precautions we can to stay safe in this world.

This device is placed under a door and sounds off an alarm when pushed against (likely because someone is trying to gain unauthorized access), providing you with an added layer of security.

In a world where personal safety is paramount, this tool will give all women, especially solo women travelers, even more peace of mind knowing that this alarm is with them.

Apple World Travel Adapter Kit

If you are Team Apple, having an Apple Adapter Kit is well worth the expense. No matter where you decide to go, having this kit will ensure that you can stay connected with the online world. The Kit includes a set of seven AC plugs with prongs that fit different electrical outlets worldwide.

Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated when traveling is super important, and having a reliable water bottle means staying hydrated without contributing to single-use plastic waste.

It can also be a money saver, as you can avoid buying water bottle after water bottle from different shops as your thirst hits you. It’s convenient, eco-friendly, and a money-saver!

There are also now reusable water bottles that are collapsible, so you don’t have to worry about them taking up too much space in your travel bags.

Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are the answer to staying organized and fitting as much as you can into your bags. These compact tools can turn my suitcase into a neatly segmented structure that makes traveling easier.

You can use packing cubes to keep your outfits separate and avoid having things move around while in transit.

Portable Charger

One of my favorite women travel essentials, I always keep several portable chargers in my travel bag when I am on the go whether I’m taking a quick trip to the museum for the day or to another city.

You never know when you won’t have an outlet to recharge your phone, and it is extremely inconvenient to have to stop your day when traveling to charge it.

Using a portable charger is the best way to ensure your devices’ battery is full and ready to go when needed.

Carry On Luggage

What’s an essential travel item list without carry-on luggage? In my early travel days, I did not own carry-on luggage. I either had checked luggage or my personal travel item with me.

Once I found out I could bring a nice-sized luggage on the plane with me and avoid waiting at baggage claim, I was sold!

Having carry-on luggage allows you to do the same and navigate airports and terminals with ease while minimizing the risk of delays or loss.

Hand Sanitizer

Hand sanitizer will always be found in my travel bag as a woman.

From the handles you will touch after thousands of other travelers have done the same to the tray tables on the airplane, hand sanitizer ensures that you fight off germs and viruses while trying to arrive safely at your destination.

Bluetooth Speaker

A Bluetooth speaker is great to have to elevate your overall travel experience. Bluetooth speakers are compact and wireless and offer a portable entertainment hub wherever you are going.

I love having my speaker in hotel rooms while showering, unwinding after a long day out exploring, or just relaxing. I usually listen to podcasts in the morning, and it allows me to set the mood and take a piece of my normal routine from home with me.

Having a speaker can also be the entry you need to create great social situations wherever you find yourself in the world.

Passport Holder

A good passport holder will keep you organized when arriving and leaving your destination.

Beyond its primary role of storing your passport, a passport holder is one of the best women travel essentials for its ability to hold so many other important travel documents.

Many holders provide organized storage for essential cards, like credit cards, boarding passes, ID, lounge passes, and TSA/Clear identification.

Not only are they chic, but they hold all of your important items in one place, so you have them when you need them.

Disposable Masks

While COVID-19 may no longer be considered an epidemic in several places worldwide, the practice of using a mask may be around for a long time in travel spaces.

I recommend keeping a few disposable masks in your bag in case you need them while on your plane ride or anywhere else where you’ll be with other people in confined spaces.

You never know when it will come in handy and when it might save you from catching something you don’t want!

Luggage Tag

A luggage tag can ensure that if your bags get lost or mistakenly taken by another passenger, the probability of it getting back to you is extremely high.

Easy to attach to any of your luggage pieces, I recommend having a luggage tag on every piece of luggage you travel with.

It’s a small investment that pays off big time, potentially making your life easier in the unpredictable world of travel.

Makeup Bag

With all the pictures waiting to be captured of you while traveling, a makeup bag will hold all of the essential cosmetics you have to transform you into a glam version of yourself.

Whether it’s a quick touch-up between flights or a full glam session for a night out, a well-packed makeup bag ensures you’re always ready to put your best face forward, no matter where your adventures take you.

Plane Phone Holder

A plane phone holder gives you a hands-free solution for entertainment and convenience during flights. In the confined space of an airplane, where tray tables may not always cooperate, a phone holder can change how you pass time on your flight.

These mounts can easily be set up on the back of the seat in front of you and keep your device at eye level without needing constant adjustments.

Travel Size Hygiene Items

Travel-size hygiene items provide a practical and space-efficient solution for staying fresh and clean on the go. These mini versions of essential toiletries ensure you can adhere to your hygiene routine without sacrificing luggage space.

Even if you are embarking on a longer trip, I recommend packing travel-size hygiene items only (unless it’s one of your favorites that you know you can’t get where you are going).

Travel-size hygiene items allow you to save space in your bags, and you can stock up on larger items if needed at your destination.

Airtag

Airtags have been raved about in the travel community for the past year but for good reasons!

Proven to be useful by many travelers, these tiny trackers, seamlessly integrated with Apple’s real-time tracking software, ensure that your valuable belongings are never lost.

You never know when your bag might be left at a layover airport or when the airline can’t tell you where it is, so this becomes one less thing to think about when traveling.

Compression Socks

Compression socks are one of the women travel essentials that can give you a practical solution to combat the physical challenges of long journeys.

Whether on a plane, train, or road trip, these socks provide graduated pressure that promotes blood circulation, reducing the risk of swelling and discomfort, particularly in the legs and feet.

Travel often requires long hours of travel in one place that can cause health issues, so compression socks act as a preventative measure by supporting healthy blood flow.

Journal

Bringing a journal on your trips is a great way to document your thoughts and experiences as you travel.

In the midst of exploring new landscapes and cultures, taking the time to journal can be extremely rewarding to look back on later.

Take the time to write down the vibrant details of each day, from the scenery to the unexpected encounters with people that make travel so fulfilling.

Contact Lens Travel Kit

Including a contact lens travel kit in your travel essentials can ensure comfort and convenience if you’re like me and rely on contact lenses.

These compact kits typically includes a lens case, small bottles for storing solution, and tools for handling lenses.

Whether you’re on a short weekend getaway or an extended vacation, having a kit for your contacts also means having clear vision and comfort throughout your travels.

Sanitizing Wipes

When traveling, you will likely find yourself in many public situations, like crowded airports and public transportation. Sanitizing wipes come in handy when encountering these less-than-sanitary facilities or areas.

You want to be able to easily clean surfaces such as tray tables, armrests, and door handles.

This will help you curate a journey that is as clean and comfortable as you can.

Pain Reliever

Bringing pain relievers on your travels is a simple yet crucial aspect of trip preparation.

You never know when pain will hit you, so having pain relievers on hand ensures that minor discomforts don’t derail your travel experience.

Period pains, headaches, and body aches are all common painful encounters we can experience as women travelers.

Packing pain relievers in your travel kit provides a quick remedy for these common ailments, allowing you to stay focused on enjoying your journey rather than being hindered by discomfort.

Printouts of Confirmations: Hotel, Drivers, Flight

One thing I will always do is print out the essential confirmation documents I will need to ensure that I arrive at my destination in one piece.

You never know when your phone might not come through for you, so having physical copies of essential travel documents, such as flight itineraries, hotel reservations, and car rental details, adds an extra layer of preparedness.

Printouts are a backup in case of unforeseen circumstances like battery failures or lost devices.

Lint Roller

Packing a lint roller in your travel essentials ensures you always look polished and put together on the road.

There’s nothing like wanting to maintain a crisp and clean appearance when traveling, yet you get hit with all this lint on your clothing.

A lint roller is small in size, and it can be a game-changer, adding a touch of neatness to your overall travel experience.

Fanny Pack

Bringing a fanny pack on your travels is a practical choice that blends convenience with style. This compact and hands-free accessory is a versatile companion, keeping your essentials easily accessible while exploring new destinations.

Fanny packs are especially useful when embarking on active, outdoor activities where you can still bring your items for the experience while not having to carry anything.

It simplifies your travel experience by keeping your necessities at arm’s reach without needing a bulky bag.

Wet Bag

If water adventures are on your itinerary, consider including a wet bag in your travel bag.

A wet bag ensures your valuables and electronics remain safe and dry from your wet ones, after unexpected downpours or aquatic activities.

Whether exploring beaches, engaging in water sports, or enduring sudden rain showers, a wet bag provides a great storage place for your wet items.

Small Blanket

Bringing a small blanket along on your travels adds comfort to your journey.

There’s nothing like having your own personal blanket while staying in chilly airplane cabins, having unexpected layovers, or simply needing an extra layer while in your accommodation.

Lightweight and foldable, it’s likely that you can bring your blanket with you regardless of where you end up and continue staying warm throughout your travels.

Jewelry Bag

If you are a jewelry girl from head to toe, you’ll be happy to see that a jewelry bag is on this women travel essentials list.

A jewelry bag ensures the safety and organization of your accessories. Typically designed with individual compartments, a jewelry bag protects your necklaces from tangling, prevents earrings from getting misplaced, and keeps rings secure.

It’s an efficient solution for traveling, allowing you to access your favorite pieces easily without the frustration of searching through a heap of jewelry or getting scratches on your pieces.

A Good Book

Finally, a good read is something that you will appreciate bringing with you on your travels.

You never know when you may need a screen-free form of entertainment when dining, commuting, or just trying to pass the time.

Reading is also just one of those things that hits a bit differently when you are in a new location, truly getting to soak up every word on the page.

A few recommendations from me are Homegoing and All About Love, both life-changing reads for me that could have the same impact on you.

  1. Thank you for these recommendations. I’ve always wondered if a woman should carry pepper spray and/lasers for protection when traveling. Please let me know what you think about it.
